How many species of african cichlid are there

how many species of african cichlid are there, and does anyone have a list of them?

... I'm starting a new aquarium, and i want it to be full of african cichlids

for an african cichlid tank, i presume you're talking about mbuna type cichlids. mbunas are lake malawi cichlids, the most aggressive. a mbuna set up should be in no less than 55 US gallons.

there are hundreds of african cichlids, from the 3 main great lakes, plus all the smaller lakes and rivers in africa, and includes madagascar which have their own species.
