  1. There are 7 species of sea turtles in the world:

    1. Chelonia mydas (Green sea turtle)

    2. Eretmochelys imbricata (Hawksbill turtle)

    3. Caretta caretta (Loggerhead turtle)

    4. Lepidochelys olivacea (Olive Ridley)

    5. Lepidochelys kempii (Kemp's Ridley)

    6. Natator depressus (Flatback turtle)

    7. Dermochelys coriaceae (Leatherback turtle)

Some scientists differentiate Chelonia agassizi (Black turtle) as the eighth species, while others consider it the same species as the Green sea turtle.

All the species except for Flatback turtle are listed as Endangered or Critically Endangered according to the IUCN Red List, meaning that their population in the wild is threatened by extinction. Let's hope that the number of species do not decrease due to extinction!
