According to the FishBase (a global information system on fishes), there are 72 species of stingrays (Family:  Dasyatidae). It is however missing a new species of freshwater stingray discovered in Thailand, Himantura kittipongi last year in 2006 and Pastinachus solocirostris discovered in Indonesia in 2005.

There are 74 species of stringrays within 6 genera:

Dasyatis

Himantura

Pastinachus

Pteroplatytrygon

Taeniura

Urogymnus
