The source below indicates $17.4 billion in athletic footwear sales in 2007. Assumably that's global, not just limited to the U.S.

Prices can of course vary a great deal, especially in various parts of the globe. There are also discount sales, etc.

If we go with an average sale price of $80, that's 217.5 million pairs of athletic shoes. If the average sale price is lower -- which it likely is for everything that's included under all conditions included -- that number would be higher.
