How many stamps does it cost to mail something?

I sent a letter from California to New York recently.

I put on a 42 cent stamp (which i thought was how much it cost), but the post office sent it back saying "Returned for Postage."

what does that mean??

i thought a 42 cent stamp is the cost to send a regular letter sized envelope anywhere nationally.

42 cents, the last I checked, will send one one ounce first class envelope anywhere in the United States, unless they've raised the rates again.

If your letter weights more than one ounce or is not a standard size envelope it will cost your more.
