  1. It depends on who you ask.

Certain countries don't abide by the 'standard time zone'.  If thier country spans 2 or more time zones, they may set ALL the clocks in the country to the same time.

However, the number of recognized time zones is the same as the hours in a day: 24.

  2. There are 24 time zones, one for each hour of the day.

  3. Time zones are divided into 15 degree (longitude) segments, so 360 degrees divided by 15 equals 24 time zones. Your question said "standard," so we are not looking at the myriad locally adjusted time zones that exist around the world.

  4. Standard time has 26 time zones.

Universal time has 37 time zones.

There are 37 official time zones in the world.  How can this be?  Ten time zones are :30 zones.  The International Dateline's eastern boundary contains 3 time zones in order to keep individual countries on the same time.

There are still 24 hours in a day but 10 countries keep time on the half hour and 3 use a time zone well outside of their standard time.

24 hour zones + 10 that keep time on the half hour and 3 use a time zone outside their standard time.
