In 15th cnetury Europeans wanted to find a western route to India as someone told them that the earth is round. When Christopher Columbus landed in the new world he committed the historic blunder of calling the natives he saw as 'Indians'. Though it was proved that he didn't arrive in India the name stuck. Even now an Average American (from the immigrant stock) call the natives 'native Indians', 'Red Indians' or 'Amerindians'. This less than intelligent way of name calling has spread to to the tip of South america, 'Cape Horn'. To compound the blunder there are more and more native Indians (to distinguish from the 'named' Indians) now in America to confuse the not-so-well-informed natives (by now).

Popular tribes amongst original inhabitants are Cherokees, Huron, Mohicans, Alongquin, Sioux, Apache, Seminole and so on.

There are 50 official states in the U.S., although there is about 4 territories belonging to it. There were different group of native Americans, which are the original inhabitants. Two are the Sioux and the Cherokees. For more info look at these.

There are 50 states. The original inhabitants ARE NOT called native Americans. They are often called American Indians. A native American is someone who was born in America.

Native means "born in".
