Its a more complex answer than just "50"

There are 50 stars on the flag, one for each incorporated state.  48 are contiguous (meaning connected), 49 are continental (the 48 contiguous and Alaska).  A total of 50 when you included Hawaii.

My teacher had me confused the same way when I was a kid... they always say "50 states, including Alaska and Hawaii"... as a kid I think that meant 52

Now... there is the District of Colombia... a territory in the contiguous US that is not a state.  It is where the nations capital, Washington, is.  Has Congressional representation.

Then... there is Puerto Rico.  This is a Caribbean Island that used to be a free nation but has freely associated itself with the US as a state.  Puerto Rico is whats called a "Free Associated State".  It does in fact have representation in Congress.  But the people there are still debating whether or not to become a full fledged state or to keep the political association they currently have... or to separate from us as an independent nation.

On top of that, the US owns a dozen or so overseas territories.
