  1. most vity and states require you to dail 1-the ara code and th number if you do not have it now you probably will soon, companies are runnig out of area codes because of cell phone use andcell phone providers are hording area codes for themselves, which i might add is legal

  2. I don't know exactly how many require it, but 10-digit dialing is put in place when overlay plans happen.

When an area becomes too populated and they bring in a new area code where some already exist, they have to require 10-digit dialing to route the calls.

For more information, read about 10-digit dialing on www.wikipedia.com.  You can also read about overlay plans.

There has been talk for several years about making that a US-wide standard but that has not happened yet.

  3. It doesnt matter what state you live in.

10 digit dialing is only used when you have two differnt area codes in the same local callign area.

For example, I live here in Louisville, Kentucky,  which is 502, but New Albany, Indiana, is across the river, and is an 812 area code. So, therefor, people who call from here to over there can use 10 digits to dial the call local.

there are other exceptions, but its too complicated to write here, I hope this helps.
