there are between 1665 steps to 1710 steps all the way to the top depending on which side you try.....

the problem is that you can only climb by stairs up to the second floor....from the second floor to the top, its forbidden to use the stairs and you have to take the lift (for safety reasons)

This count  includes:

9 steps to the ticket booth at the base

328 steps to the first level

340 steps to the second level

18 steps to the lift platform on the second level

15 steps to the upper observation platform.

The official Eiffel Tower website (http://www.tour-eiffel.fr/teiffel/uk/pra...  has the following statement

Q : How many stairs to get to the top?

A : 1665 from the ground to the top via the east pillar.

However, the steps from the second floor to the top are closed to the public.
