  1. I would imagine that a majority of learning disabled children do not attend special education classes.  The reason is that learning disabilities vary and children can be helped without being in "special education."  The reason children are placed in a "special education" environment is because they cannot keep up the pace the a "regular education" class demands.  These children learn differently (it does not mean that they cannot learn) and so teaching must be approached differently.  In my state in order to be placed in special education classes a child must be tested, a meeting is held (The committee of Special Education) where parents and teachers, psychologist, and an advocate all meet to decide what is best (after a certain age the child may attend also).

  2. A very small percentage because children are screened and assessed as early as 3.  And in public school the education is free.  Go on the Department of Education website and look up special ed statistics, or the Census Bureau and look up special ed.  Here's something that may trip you out:  70% of the men in prisons today were in special ed at some point in their life, or have some type of documented learning disability.

  3. kdeekdee answered it correctly....the student can not choose whether or not to "enroll" in special education. A team that consists of parents, regular and special ed teachers, administrators (principals &/or counselors), and a psychometrist or psychologist (one who conducts testing) are the ones who decide if the child is eligible for special education and what types of services he or she will receive. And it is also true that if the child had a choice he would probably choose not to be in special education due to embarassment... but unknown to most students, there are MANY children who receive special education services for learning disabilities and they are much more successful because of the help that they get.

  4. Well, the child can not  make this decision. It is the parents that decide this.  If a child does not agree to it, he has no say in the matter if the parents choose this.

There are probably lots of them that would not choose this if they had the ability to.
