  1. Ones that come from the eye, or the verb to rip? In the first case, I'd say two. Would you ask the same question about "tires"? If you did, you'd have to admit that the homophone "tie-ers" (people who tie knots) has two. Therefore, "tears" from the eye has two.

    However, the verb to rip has only one, just as the relative uncommon word "tares" (the plant, like a vetch) would have.

    I make my kindergarten class put 2 fingrs 2gether then say the word wile hitting their palm with the two fingrs and however many times they hit their hands thats how many syllables there are in the word!!!
