How many tables are required at a Cake and Punch wedding reception? none, mingle? one for every person?

I am getting married in Jan 2009. We are planning a cake and punch reception at the hall attached to the church. I am being told that tables are not required at that type of reception because people just mingle. Is this true? How do people drink punch and eat cake at the same time with no tables?

One chair for every butt, and include enough tables for all the chairs.

Some tables will help, but you don't need a table slot for everyone.  Make sure you have plenty of chairs though - some by the tables but also around the room for people who need to sit.

I would set it  up like a cocktail party.  a few of those small,  high tables that  people can gather around if they wish  ( one table for every 10 people), some chairs  against the wall (one per person is being generous, so perhaps one  for every 5 people) and some  larger tables of regular  height where  they can leave empty glasses and plates (one in each corner of the room and one in the middle of the room).

Definitely have tables and chairs.  I would say enough for about half of your guests to sit.  The other half will most likely mingle about, but you will have older gusests that will want to sit and talk.

I would be sure to provide at least a few tables since you will probably have some older people or small children that won't be able to stand and eat at the same time.

I would have enough tables and chairs for everyone. People don't want to "stand" around. I am 21 years old but I have a bad back and can't stand for long periods and would need a chair to sit down. You just never know whats going on with people.

People also hate standing and eating (even cake!) to make things comfortable, at least have enough places for everyone to sit.
