  1. only a man would ask this question, tee hee hee.

there is no such thing as a painless labour, except maybe not getting pregnant?

  2. As far as i know, there is no such thing as a truly painless labour. Minimum pain-i'd say a general anaesthetic for a Caesarean (the pain would come from the medication being administered) but you have a lot of pain after it. All over forms of labour involve pain.

  3. There's drugs and breathing techniques that can reduce the pain, but there's no 100% pain free labor method.

  4. Epidurals are the best pain relief for labor, although  they are not 100%. There is also water births that ease the back pains and cramping effects. I had an epidural with my son, and fully plan on having one with my daughters (36 weeks w/twins). Epidurals do not harm the babies in anyway, can cause you to itch, and can slow down labor. The negatives are easily fixed. Epidurals have less side effects than introvienous drugs that are used. The bad about epidurals they are dangerous to administer, a needle is put into the spinal column.

  5. None. There are several ways to reduce the pain but no method actually stops it all.

  7. The only way to have a baby without pain is to use a surrogate or adopt! (Even then you have the pain involved with being a parent afterwards..... BUT funnily enough women keep doing it!)

  8. First and most important is to note that the experience of pain varies from culture to culture. Some tribal cultures claim not to have pain in labor. Some discomfort, although some claim to have none.

Women who live in cultures where midwifery and and doulas/labor support are common have less intense pain than American women who live in a society with a high expectation of intense pain, and highly medicalized births. That said, even some American women have painless births.

Also interesting is the physiology of labor. Labor is nothing more than uterine contractions. When a woman has an intense contractions, that intense pleasure comes from uterine contractions. I have yet to hear a woman complain of terribly painful orgasms.

As far as techniques for painless labor, some find epidurals to be nearly completely effective. Medical hypnosis/hypnotic anesthesia can be very effective, however there are many variables contributing to the success of such methods, such as the level of commitment of the woman, whether she is compliant with her practice schedule, and the skill of the provider. As far as I know, the most successful program for eliminating pain is Hypnobabies. Hypnobabies is the only program that uses true medical hypnosis/hypnotic anesthesia. 70% of women report  pain-free births.

Aside from support, comfort measures can dramatically reduce the pain of birth, as the research on birth with labor support shows. Techniques such as water, walking, birth balls, belly lift can reduce the pain enough for many women to successfully birth naturally.

  9. You're going to get lots of answers for this one.

Labour = hard work = pain!!   A women's body prepares to unleash 9 months of holding that baby and then it only takes 3-8 hours + give or take for the baby to come out.  Pretty amazing really!!  I don't think anyone could guarantee a pain-free labour, even with drugs there is some pain involved with administering it.  Plus unless you have been there before, you really don't know what to expect until it is happening.

Lots of breathing, focusing, support and words of encouragement "you CAN do it!!".  Go natural if you can (so much better for bub) but if you can't - the main thing is they have made it into this wonderful world!

    Good luck :)
