  1. Very few players will ever make it to 2000. To do so you most likely needed to start very young, have good opponents to play against, study master games constantly, and most certainly you will need an excellent teacher/coach.

To say that after 10,000 games or 10 years you can make GM is like saying after 15 years you can make it to the NBA.

  2. In my case, I became an expert at the US Open in Chicago in 1979 after my 213th tournament game (and 4 1/2 years of USCF play).  Of course there were hundreds of other offhand games and so on (and a lot of book and game study).

  3. Hi,

It normally takes about 10 years to become a GM.  See my link below.......

  4. This differs from person to person and also depends on time controls. Obviously you learn more from playing longer games against stronger players and then going over them after. The amount and kind of study you do between games is also a big factor. Many people play thousands of games and never make it to 2000 in their whole lives, while some kids can make it in just a few years.

There's no concrete way to determine just how many games it will take for each inidividual to reach 2000.

  5. many

  6. It technically takes only 1   beat an Expert when you are provisional...:)
