Right now, in our summer, China is 13 hours ahead of Central Daylight Time.  When it is 8 a.m. CDT, it will be 9 p.m. in the Chinese capital.

Houston is actually 14 time zones behind China.  (One writer said twelve, but you must count carefully.)  Houston is six time zones behind Greenwich Mean Time, while China is eight hours ahead.  In winter, that would make Houston 14 hours behind (7 a.m. CST = 9 p.m. China Central Time).  Since in Texas clocks are turned ahead one hour, that makes China 13 hours ahead now.
