How many times can you paint a car?

I'm looking to buy a used car, but it's been painted once. I'm assuming when they paint, they just paint over the old paint so... would it be okay to paint it a second time?

Absolutely, however this is where quality workmanship will come in. Removing, rather than masking parts will help eliminate noticable paint build up. Ther are older cars out there that have been painted many times. Just remember, a poor repair that shows now will need some extra attention or it will show through the new paint job.
