How many times can you re-record on a single DVD-R?

Question

OK, I'm new to this whole DVD recording lark so please excuse my rather naive question.

I do a lot of temporary recording and I was concerned about disc longevity, so how many times can you re-record on a single DVD-RW?

Sorry if I don't get around to choosing the best answer, I'm not at home right now and my internet access is limited. But thanks in advance to all who answer!

If its DVD-RW then you can record unlimited times till the disc wears down or till it says are you nuts?

I don't know the theoretical limit, but I've recorded on the same disc at least 20 times.
