Question:

How many times can you run a Return ticket through the barriers in CityRail stations?

I know the barriers capture Single tickets once you run them through at your destination but how many times can a Return ticket be run through before they get captured? I know it's more than twice but does anyone know the specific amount?

For example, if I need to go back through to go to the toilets.

I know this question is weird but at least it's new!

  1. I always tried to hang on to mine so I could pass back through if I needed to. Try to go through the open barrier and show your ticket. If you cant, you can only pass it through twice before its captured.

I live in Perth now and they have the best public transport which you can use a Smart Rider card- and if you need to go in and out it wont charge you any more.

  2. Get yourself a day tripper ticket.

It is not much more expensive than a return ticket and you will have unlimited use of government train bus or ferry until the early hours of the morning.

  3. only twice

one time i put it through the machine.. then a couple of minutes later i realised that i was on the wrong side of the station so i went through again, and i was waiting for my ticket to come through and it woulndn't :,(

  4. A return means there and back, once only.

  5. once. but its not like anyone actually buys the ticket. cityrail is 4th world garbage.

  6. 4 times (assuming all stations visited have barriers).

    1. scans on passing barriers entering into the starting platfrom outbound.

    2. scans on passing barriers on exiting destination platform outbound.

    3. scans on passing barriers on re-entering destination platform inbound.

    4. scans and captures ticket on passing barriers on exiting starting platform again.

Note:  if you bought the ticket at a station without barriers then you get an extra ticket scan since you would have missed the first scan (legally you shouldn't though and barrier staff may pull you up on it).

Also remember that you can't normally break your journey on a return trip.   If you do, you should be prepared to buy a one way ticket to complete your journey.
