  1. Thomas Edison actually had 3,000 attempts  to create the lightbulb. When asked about the failures he said "I didn't fail 3,000 times. I found 3,000 ways how not to create a lightbulb"

  2. Edison tried over 10,000 different substances in making the filament of an incadesent lightbulb until he found one material that lasted long enough to make the lightbulb cheap enough to sell and make money off of.

He also had to find a substance that would not burn up too soon. Who is going to buy lightbulbs that burn up everyday ?

Finnally Edison tested a bamboo filament that lasted for hundreds of hours.

  3. supposedly, he found a hundred ways to fail, so I'd say 101.

  4. When Thomas Edison was interviewed by a young reporter who boldly asked Mr. Edison if he felt like a failure and if he thought he should just give up by now. Perplexed, Edison replied, "Young man, why would I feel like a failure? And why would I ever give up? I now know definitively over 9,000 ways that an electric light bulb will not work. Success is almost in my grasp." And shortly after that, and over 10,000 attempts, Edison invented the light bulb.
