  1. About the same number of times we have captured an Al Qaida "high value" target.

No one even knows what winning is over there so how can you win.  These folks barely understand who is the enemy in the first place.  The whole scenario is a mockery of human intelligence.

The "Surge" is a surge of payouts (Like Debbie mentioned I think) to the secular Sunnis that retain all the real military power over the country.  We tried to bank on the Shiites to kiss our butts and then fight the religious extremists that entered upon Saddams defeat, but instead the Shiites, obviously, sided with Iran instead and tried to take as much power away from the Sunnis as possible.  Since the only power there still relatively friendly to us are the very people we deposed in the first place, we ended up paying them to fight the AlQaida guys we brought with us instead of fighting us.  We have come full circle there.

The only winners have been the ones who made profit off the privatization of Iraqi industries and reconstruction with no bid contracts.  It is a money laundering scam of the greatest order.

Those who needed to win did so the day we signed our first contract.  Everyone else are secondary winners and losers.

  2. the only thing they have secured is suitcases full of money they are handing over to insurgents

  3. Too many times to still hold any credibility.

The secret to the supposed success of the surge is plain to see. If you kill over a million people, wound and maim perhaps three times that many, turn five million more into exiles or refugees in their own land, round up tens of thousands of the young men who have survived this slaughter and imprison them without charges in detention camps, it is possible to achieve a temporary suppression of popular resistance.

The “personal traits” of George W. Bush that equipped him to preside over such a venture are gross ignorance, sadism, an unflinching commitment to the interests of the financial aristocracy into which he was born, and an absolute contempt for the suffering of working people. He is, in short, a mental cipher and a moral cripple.

No doubt from Berlin in 1939 the n**i “surge” into Poland also seemed a great success, achieved by similar methods, and there were many who attributed this to the “personal traits,” including the stubbornness and self-confidence, of Germany’s Führer.

For the millions upon millions of people in the US and around the world who have opposed the US intervention in Iraq from the outset, the issue was not whether mass killing and the systematic destruction of a society would “work,” but rather opposition to a criminal war of aggression.

“Um Mohammed, a 49-year-old widow in Baghdad’s western Mansur neighborhood, whose husband was abducted and shot by gunmen 15 months ago, bitterly blamed the US military for the loss, which has profoundly affected her and her family,” AFP reported.

“Why does the world care so much about the 4,000 soldiers killed? No one cares about the Iraqis,” she said. “All the killings in Iraq are because of the Americans. They are the cause of all the bloodshed. I ask Allah to kill all the American soldiers—to count them all and not leave any one of them. The world regards the American soldiers as our saviors but they are murderers.”

These sentiments are representative and ensure that armed resistance will continue as long as a single American solder remains in Iraq.

  4. Sheesh.  We are preparing to turn Bagdhad over to the Iraqis.  This is no thanks to Obummer and people of his ilk.

  5. Can you believe it.  I had know idea we were close to winning again.  I am so happy Palin let us know that in her speech.  Now we know for sure McCain has absolutely know intention of changing anything for our troops over there.

(What does it actually mean to win the war in Iraq.  What does it mean to almost win.  Is that like check vs check mate.  What are our goals to win this war.  I was never actually clear on that.  I thought we were just interested killing folks to keep us safe.  Can that really ever end?)
