  1. I would guess they displaced about 200 tons... they were only about 80 feet long with a 10 foot draft and a beam of 12 to 14 feet or so... and that would compute out to about 200 metric tons.

    You don't actually WEIGH a boat... the displacement is COMPUTED from a complex formula that includes all the UNDER WATER APPENDAGES..  


  2. About 200 tons. Galleon was a general type of ship. English Galleons were smaller and more handy than Spanish. They could run up to about 1,000 though....The dates you quoted would have been really late for a Galleon though. They were a lot more common in the 1500's. There were Spanish Galleons, French, Portuguese, English, even Italian city states. All had distinctive rigs and hull lines that could be recognized by sailors back then. Interestingly after the defeat of the Spanish Armada, Spain deliberately built a class of Galleons that were lighter and smaller, thus more handy. Better able to fight English. It was these Galleons of the Indies guard that defeated Sir Richard Grenville's "Revenge".
