How many total number of fast food places are there in America?

In the U.S., there are approximately 575,000 restaurants that generated about $360 billion in annual sales in 2007.

However, the number can be different depending on how you define "Fast Food".  For example, using the U.S. Government Census definition for "Food Service & Drinking places" the number is 504,641.
