  1. Do you mean how many locomotives are there, or how many multiple units? Do you want to include freight trains? Or do you mean how many trains run on an average day in the UK ?

  2. Lots more than some people think.

  3. Depends how you class a train. Do you mean any form of transport that runs on rails of any sort, then you cover, light rail, trams, private railways, frieght and loco haul, excursions, engineer locos, etc. In which case you are talking nearer to a million units.

If you are just classing Main and Branchline class 1 and 2 services (local and express passenger services) and excluding London Underground, you could be talking in the region of 10,000 units+ over the whole of the UK.

  4. you can buy train spotters handbooks for all rolling stock in the UK from coaching stock to freight waggons and specialist waggons,ie breakdown and tamping machines, these pamphlets will list all the current classes of rolling stock, their numbers and prefixes...

Believe me they run into the tens of thousands,

  6. Rather a lot - hey maybe there might be some trainspotters on this site who can give you an aswer!!

  7. What time of day is it?  Please use US CST (daylight savings) units.

  8. Wait there!iam just going to count them now!

    Ok i'm back.

    12,744 exactly.

  9. At a guess... about 1356.  But only 4 of these ever run on time, or have enough carriages for commuters to sit down in.
