  1. Are you referring to individuals or species? If the former, absolutely nobody knows. If the latter, well, the situation is only marginally better. Estimates for the number of angiosperm species varies, but are typically in the range of 225,000 - 240,000 species. That number might be as high as 450,000 if you include all vascular species. Add to that uncertainty the uncertainty associated with how many of those are trees, and the problem that many species range from shrubs to treelets to trees.

    That said, it's been estimated that the total number of tree species ranges from 60,000 to 100,000 species globally. This range comes from a recent review on the evolution of trees (Petit & Hampe. 2006. AREES 37: 187-214).
