  1. He had 4 different commands and so the number of troops that he commanded changed as his rank changed. Could you be more specific?

  2. LIke he said:   during the war he commanded many different units and armies, from 5,000 to over 90,000. depends what time of the war your taslking about, which battle.  each time he was promoted he was in comand of more troops.  also by the end he was overall commander of the entire us armed land forces , even ithe ones in other states, with numbers over 1,000,000 easily. it's like asking how many men wherein geneal Pershing army in WWI or Eisenhower in WWII, all land troops where under them all by the ends of the wars they fought in.  All general in the Union army ciommanded atleast a division (half, third or quarter of an army) and that varies in size for the mission. most divisions had atleast 10,000 some as much as 25,000.  there where not numbered armies, the armies had names, "army of the potomac (over 100,000).  grant was the right man at the right time t be in charge, he climbed his way up in rank, and with each step up, the troops multiplied.  ballpark figures are really broad to estimate in such a case, they cnaged monthly often.

  3. How many troops did he order into a certain death in his "overun the Rebs with numbers" strategy is a better question.

  4. Army of Tennesee from Shiloh up to Vicksburg: 40,000 were in his command/...., during the siege of Vicksburg, Union forces grew to 70,000

General-in-Chief of the Union Armies: 1864: he was in charge of four military divisions, totaling seventeen subcommands, wherein 500,000 combat soldiers were under his command.  During this phase of the war, he accompanied Meade's Army of the Potomic which was one of the 17 subcommands (but most notable).

  5. He was in command of different units at different phases of the war. At the end of the war, he was General-in-Chief and commanded all Union Forces in both the Western and Eastern theaters.

Any brigade commander and higher commanded "thousands of troops". So you name a Colonel or General and they all commanded thousands.

Robert E. Lee, Stonewall Jackson, James Longstreet, Joshua Chamberlain, William Tecumseh Sherman, Phillip Sheridan, George Meade, etc.
