How many vegetarians are there around the world?

In the US it's about 2-3% of the total population of which 1% is vegan. So about 6-9million vegetarians of which 60,000 to 90,000 are vegans in the US. That means for every 100 people you meet in the US, about 2 or 3 will be vegetarians.  And for every 100 vegetarians, 1 will be a vegan  

However, there is a dispute in the totals as many claim to be vegetarians but eat fish or chicken on a fairly regular basis.

Worldwide, it's said to be around 10%. So that's about 600,000,000 vegetarians and vegans in a population estimated to be around 6billion.
