Evidently not enough to hurt the population of the species of whales that they hunt.  So what is the problem?  Japan is a sovereign nation and does not need the approval of Greenpeace to hunt some whales.

Millions.  Whale meat is a traditional food in Japan.  So the number depends on the timeframe.  Are you talking about this year, or since Japan started eating whale meat?
