How many wind turbines are needed to make as much energy as one nuclear power plant?

Need this information for an important debate final. PLEASE- NO FALSE ANSWERS!

I would say that you would need to cover the country with these monsters. Just remember that these, so called turbines, are dependent on the wind and that they do not work if the wind is less that 5 mph and have to be braked and stopped when it is higher than 30 mph. if you want these to be the dominant power source then you must put up with long periods when no power is produced.

At present the out put of wind farms in existence is only about 20% of capacity due to these factors.

If it is for something as important as a debate final, you should look it up rather than trusting that people on Y!A know what they are talking about :)

I suggest looking on Wikipedia.  However, realize that both types of power plants will certainly come in different "sizes".

For an 18 m span of wind turbine, would approx. generate 100 kW power.

An Average nuclear power plant with todays technology would produce 350 GW of power. Thats 350.000.000 kW!!

So, we need 3.500.000 of 18 m blade span wind turbines.

Forget the Wiki reference above.  He's got his numbers a little wrong.

Typical wind turbines can produce up to about 3 MW for commercial power generation.  The newest generation of nuclear reactor is producing between 800 and 1500 MW.  

You're looking at approximately 500 of the best turbines to match a single reactor.  Windmills kill birds.  Nuclear plants kill cost gouging oil b******s.

Windmills are NOT the solution.
