That's a very intriguing question. I know he had many, but I've never heard the number either. Your query got me searching, though, and I've found this on the net. According to the sources cited on Wikipedia, Muhammad is said to have had thirteen wives or concubines (there are differing accounts on the status of some of them as wife or concubine.
