Question:

How many words should my 14 month old son be able to say?

He says a few little things, but not too many. He says "Mama", What's that?, and All Gone. Other then that he does not really talk too much, and I am not sure if anyone but my husband and I could understand even what he is saying. He chats constantly, just nothing that we can understand still. He understands very well.....he waves, blows kisses, if you ask him where the puppy is he shows you etc.... Should I be worried that he is not saying enough? He has his 18 month check up in a couple of months, so I am trying to stay calm until then and address at the appointment. Any pointers on how to get him chatting more english? My husband and I are constantly talking to him trying to get him to repeat us....doesn't work.

Thanks

  1. This is about right in my opinion. I would suggest you monitor his language development, but I would not worry about it at this stage. My nursery is accredited by ICAN, and I can recommend their parent/carer website for advice and tips to encourage communication, speech and language development.

This link is for the home page:

This is the link for what a typical child aged 12 - 18 months should be doing

Don’t worry, although mention it at his check up if you are still concerned. Don’t make too much of a deal of it with him (he may clam up), just model the words back when he tries to say them.

    Good luck x

  2. all kids speak at their own pace.  my son didn't really say much at all until well after his 2nd birthday, my daughter is 13 months with a vocabulary of about 30 words!!

don't worry about it.  relax, encourage him as much as you can, but don't push.  if he's still not talking at 3, then take him to a speech therapist.

    good luck!

  3. like maybe 2 like he sould be able to sy liek mom o or dad or no

  4. He sounds like he's doing great. My child is about the same age and he's doing none of that. He's in speech therapy along with developmental therapy. He's not all that far behind, but far enough to qualify for services and to worry me!

    Good luck.

Have him evaluated by parents as teachers or first steps. PAT is free and First Steps rates are on a sliding scale. We get it for free because we are 200 percent below the poverty level. ....though we don't qualify for food stamps or WIC.

  5. I also have a 14month old and I would say he is at about the same stage. He can say mum, daddy, dog, bob (daughters friend) ta, look book, car, tata, uh oh - then he tries to say cat (cack) thank you (fafu), dinner or milk (narnar) Joe (doh) and tickle (ickle). He has a toy phone and babbles in this. I just read to him a lot, sing him songs and mention everything we come across lots such as wheres the dog - shall we go and find the dog - oh look here's the dog nice dog - good dog etc. I think it also depends on if you have other children. My first wasn't very quick to learn but the others have been they like being like their siblings.

So stop worrying and give him time they are all different and one day you wont be able to shut him up and wish he had a volume button :o)

PS just noticed your Little one is putting 2 words together that is quite good for this age.

  6. i seriously think his doing good for his age.. some kids just develop their speech slower especially boys... yeah i think it's good that you and your husband keeps talking to him he will eventually pick the words up.. i guess he just need some time.. dont worry so much about it!!

  7. My little boy is 18 months and he does not talk but he does go on and on sometimes god knows what he is trying to say so don't worry to much Einstein did not talk till he was 3, so just keep talking to him as you would normal talk to your partner or friends and one day he will surprise you.

  8. he sounds like he is right on schedule..  Kids learn to talk at different ages, just like they learn to walk, and are potty trained ad different ages.

  9. My son is now 17 months old and has all of the sudden started saying at least two new words a day.  He has just started doing this, this week.  Before this he also had a few phrases but mostly just constantly babbled.  I was getting worried too.  Everyone told me that boys are slower to talk than girls but I was still concerned.  I would say judging from my experience that your son is fine and that he will get more vocal in the months to come.

  10. If he understands what you are saying everything is fine.

If he can point to where the puppy is when you ask him to and if he can blow kisses when asked i really wouldnt worry.

Alot of children understand what is beign said and can say things themselves but they just don't bother to because either they dont feel the need to or they just don't feel like it. He will become more chatty as he gets older, but for now i'd say he is perfectly fine (:

  11. at 13 months my daughter could say over 35 words

shes now 15 months and can say well over 60 words and sentences

like the other day she said mummy thats my breakfast

or mummy theres a horse. shes a great talker

but every child is different i still have difficulty understanding my 6 year old neice cheers for the thumbs down ppl just because you dont beleive that she can talk like that lol if only i could record her saying those things then maybe you will beleive me lol lol lol

  12. he sounds absolutely normal to me i know about this worry iv done it 4 times myself and felt the same wat as you each time think its normal to worry he will get more clear as he grows i know two year olds at his stage still so i wouldnt worry just keep doing what you have been all kids progress at different stages so just enjoy it while he is like this will soon be chatting your ears off why if i hear that word one  more time i swear i will scream

  13. our little boy was exactly same now he is 18 months old and he has come on a lot and even we were suprised he still moans a lot though

  14. Between 2 -10....but,he's doing fine! I had concerns over my son at that age when he was only saying a few words, took him to a specialist, no concerns. Now he has just turned 2 and he is repeating everything we say an putting 3 words together at a time. my advice is keep up the good work,a worried parent is a gd parent so Im sure your teaching all you need too. my only one bit of advice other then repititon is using picture books of his favourte things, be it cars, donosaurs animals. keep repeating the words in the books, making the sounds, and he will soon start copying. I also found singing twinkle twinkle little star, and old macdonald taught him quick!

  15. From what you described he sounds like he is doing fine.  You will see from time to time that new words pop out all the time.  I do not think you should worry, but if you are concerned, then speak to your DR when you go to your next check up.  But watch, soon you will not be able to keep him quiet...

Enjoy these years....... because when they can talk back...ugh...........the gray hairs will come....LOL>..
