  1. everyone learns and grows in diffrent times. they should be saying basic stuff, mom, dad, bear, bottle, blanky. that kind of stuff but that doesnt mean that they HAVE to be. to improve a babies language do interactive stuff. like learning animal names at a zoo. foods by eating them. also read to them alot. say whats that, then tell them what something is (in an illistration)

  2. His vocabulary should be beyond that, but don't freak out or anything. Just try to teach him new words, point at things and tell him their names. At this age, he should be slowly starting to put together two or three words. As in "daddy, cup, juice"

  3. My son wasn't even saying mama or dada at 19 months so I really wouldn't worry too much.  My nephew, apparently, didn't say his first word until he was 3 and it was dinosaur.  He's 8 now and speaks perfectly fine.  Unless there's something going on like lots of ear infections or hearing loss of some sort, he's probably fine.  Turned out my son had fluid behind his ears and wasn't hearing clearly so we had tubes put in.  He caught up pretty quickly.  Others will tell you he should be speaking this many words but that isn't true.  Every child develops at different rates.

  4. Dont let anybody tell you it's not normal.  My son at 18 months only said mama, ball, dada, and papa.  he is 2 1/2 now and is saying so much now~!  Same thing with my friend's son, he is the same way, and same age as my son.  My cousin's son, is 4 months younger and barely talks.  Boys are slower than girls, and every child will develop at their own pace.  If he is 4 and not talking, then I would be concerned...but, who's to say that's not normal!  Enjoy it....lol...because once they start they won't shut up!..lol.

  5. boys are generally slower than girls

just keep speaking around him and to hm he'll soon pick up

  6. its fine, if want to get them talking(and trust me the earlier they talk the earlier they talk back ^^) when you're with him just constantly talk about what you are doing and he will pick it up very fast.

  7. my son is almost 19months old and only says a handful of words. i have a friend who has a baby around the same age and only says a handful of words so it is of no concern. it is somewhat true that girls learn faster than boys.

  8. no thats normal.. my daughter didnt start getting a vocab until about then... once they start it just floods in like they have known it all along they just learned how to get it out... so enjoy it while it lasts

  9. he should be saying about 24 words. My son was not at that age and I waited until 24 months to seek help from Early intervention---that was a huge mistake. by the time he saw a speech therapist at 27 months old he had a 12 month delay in expressive speech.

your best bet is to have him screened by early intervention. They will arrange for him to get free speech therapy until he catches up. My son has made great strides in just 6 months...most people do not know that he is delayed, but he will continue speech until he turns 3 in november. Next month he will be screened to try and qualify for special ed preschool to continue his free therapy.

In most cases an expressive speech delay is totally NOT an indicator of lower intelligence. My son was so smart that he started to create his own sign language!! and within 2 weeks of starting to learn sign language he was making jokes!

  10. Every child is different, so I would not be too worried just yet.  He understands more than he can speak, right?  My son loved the Baby Einsteins Baby Wordsworth video, it was great for teaching simple, everyday words.  Until he is over two, I would say just try to use the real words for whatever he is referring to and no baby talk, and if he uses gestures or sign language (both are a pre-cursor to the actual development of the speech required to speak the word) then you can encourage that and speak the word back to him.  Use adult language as often as possible that would be within his means of understanding (ie talk to him like he is a person, not a baby) and he will start becoming quite the little parrot in no time!  And it is not true that boys are slower with speech than girls--it actually depends on the individual child and sometimes their particular circumstances, regardless of their s*x.

  11. Children take on words at different levels, some are born introverts it seems.  Don't start worrying yet.

  12. It's actually great! Most children or toddlers I know don't know that many words. It's said that the more breastfeeding the higher the intelligence of the child. Keep breastfeeding and soon you'll have a strong, smart, and healthy baby. I would try to get your child to love books because then their vocabulary will expand so much faster than a child that plays video games all the time. Buy

reading and math books too so you have a very smart child. When school starts your child will easily be ten times smarter than all the other children.

  13. Kids are different, some are quick at learning to crawl/walk/talk etc some aren't. My son is one of them chatter boxes! 19Months old is still a young age, and there is still plenty of time to learn things :D If i ever have any concerns i do come on here (obviously) to compare notes with other parents but i also go see my health visitor :) Encourage him lots, i am such a chatter box, heck i have nobody to talk to all day most days, so my son has to listen to me lol, but everytime he speaks i listen very carefully, making sure i understand what he's saying and i repeat it, i cannot tell you how many times he makes me repeat things over and over!! But that's how they learn :D He says lots and lots, his first proper scentence is eg. ByeBye Daddy, see you soon Daddy!
