  1. I have had a kidney, not a liver, transplant, but in some ways they are similar. The most dangerous time is during the transplant and immediately afterwards. If the person is doing well and the liver is working, the risks get less with time. It can not be predicted who will survive and for how long, but if you do well you may live a full life - i.e. 20 or more years.

"One-year patient survival rates of 85% to 90% and five-year patient survival rates of 65% are now very common".  It will depend on the overall health of the person and what caused the liver failure. Drinking alcohol is not advisable.

There is information about this and other useful info for liver transplant patients here:  www.livertransplant.org/patientguide

  2. 75 % live 3 years or more and its not known because the longest living one is still alive and was transplanted Jan 1970.  They do need immumosuppressant drugs though for the rest of there life although some have been weaned off.

  3. This is highly individualized.

When to get a transplant is a more difficult question. Predictions on how long you will live without a transplant are not that accurate when it comes to viral hepatitis.

You do not want a new liver when the old one still has some miles left in it, as you can fully expect the transplanted liver to become infected while at the same time you have to take immune suppresant drugs that vastly increase your risk of dying from infections of all types.

See the Merck Manual of Diagnosis and Therapy, now free online for medical information you can trust.

  4. I myself have been looking up info on this subject for years and science says 5-7 years before another is needed but I believe it's up to God if you believe in him cause my uncle had one with a perfect match and died in 2 weeks and then my sisters husband had one and he's doing great and going on 13 years with his.

  5. Every patient suffering from liver disease with a liver transplant ( or hepatic transplantation ) is not expected to survive. However majority of patients do survive and their life expectancy may range from 6 months to 25 years depending on how well was the new liver accepted by the patient's body and how well has the prognosis for the patient's liver disease been carried out.
