How many years does a US passport expire from that date that it was issued?

How many years does the passport last for? I am Canadian and I would like to know out of curiosty because I am writing to a woman in Nigeria whom claims to be AMERICAN citizen with a passport that expires in 2014.

They are valid for 10 years. You will have to find out now when the passport was issued. Let her send you a scanned copy of the passport and you can then follow up with your own checks to see if she is really authentic.

i hope that you know this woman very well........ ?the likelyhood of her being an american citizen and her still being in Nigeria? is from none to nothing! a passport last 10 years from the date of deliverance wich is written on the front of the passport, not sure how you have met her? but one thing for sure?

They are generally valid for ten years.  I can almost guarantee you that whoever you are writing to is not who they claim to be.  Nigeria is a hotbed of internet and other scams.  What you are describing sounds like the set up to a number of scams that I am familiar with....
