  1. Took a longer time in the 60's and 70's. I trained from 1967 to 1975 before I received my first black belt.

What I find curious is this question gets asked over and over. It seems that those asking it have the mind set that once they get to black belt they have "arrived", or something.  Black belt is the beginning of the real training. It is only the first step. Until one reaches it they haven't begun to understand what the style contains.

  2. No less than 5 years. But you shouldn't just go chasing after a black belt. You'll do much better if you're patient and make sure you learn everything you need to know to progress to the next belt properly. If you just rush into it, haviing a black belt won't reflect your skill.

  3. for my style 5 - 7 years & most assuredly not earlier than 5

  4. for most schools its 4 if you were really really hard

  5. depends on the style and grading system. I,m a black belt in kyokushin karate, which is known world wide as the strongest karate you can do. In kyokushin, the grading sydtem is as follow.....white belt, red belt, red belt tip, blue belt, blue belt tip, yellow belt, yellow belt tip, green belt, green belt tip, brown belt, brown belt tip, black belt. It took me 5 and a half years to get there and i/ve lost count how many katas i had to learn to get there. The black belt grading went for 7 hours where i had to fight 50 2min fights against other kyokushin fighters who were green belt tip or higher. Was in bed for 3 and a half days after and i couldn't walk for nearly a week! Still want to be a black belt? Good luck!

  6. Hi,

That's a great question definitely showing interest in this incredible sport.

It naturally depends on your own commitment to this sport. Karate is the art of self-defense using nothing less than your own hands and body. When seasoned karatekas give away a demonstration, it can be truly impressive.

By joining a karate club, you will learn many things like self-control, physical discipline (the art of making your body do what you want it to do), concentration and focus.

Some will receive a black belt from their "sensei" (Karate Master) after 4 to 6 years of intensive and dedicated practice, while others will have to practice for more than 10 years to get it.

If you want to get serious about Karate, you could check out this great resource:

Here you will find the people who are in the business of teaching Karate.

Whatever you do, you will never regret having a few years of karate practice under your belt. I know. I did! (I had to stop after a health problem).

    Good luck to you.

  7. depends on how bad financially the institution you are attending.
