If someone wanted to attend a public school (as private school tuition does not depend on residency) in a specific state, how many years would they have to have been living in that state to get the discount for college?

For example, if you want to go to TU, how many years would you have to live there (Texas) to get a cheaper tuition?

  1. I believe it is one full year.

  2. It's only one year if you're over 24 in most states. If you live and work in the state for 1 year without going to school, most states will consider you a resident.

If you're under 24, it will be impossible in most states as you are considered a resident of wherever your parents live and pay tax. Everyone would do this if it were easy. In most states if you start as an out of state student, you can never be considered in state.

  3. It depends on the school's (or rather the state's) polices for residency. I believe it's usually two or three years.

  4. For Texas (TU) it is 12 months.  It is different for every state.  Besides tuition discounts, you also need to consider that many states offer loan forgiveness after college for residents that work in targeted subject and geographic areas.

  5. i know somebody who got in state tutition after one yr in Chicago. idk if its the same else where but i think it is.
