  1. As long as Brian Sabean is the General Manager, they won't be competing for a long time.

Sabean is a poor drafting GM (check out the link below) which will ultimately sabotage their efforts to "go young". Yes, he did strike gold with Lincecum but as another person already mentioned, the Giants farm system is pretty much barren right now when it comes to pitching and outfield prospects. Sabean has also been known for years to throw money at veteran players who are way past their prime or who clearly had career years in the prior season.

Never forget: Sabean is the guy who gave away Joe Nathan, Francisco Liriano and Boof Bonser for who???  A.J. Pierzynski.

  2. 1-2 years. The NL West is always up for grabs. San Fransisco's pitching with Linsecum now can make them a threat next year if they spend the bucks to get some hitting. LA should be dominating with their salary, but they seemed to be cursed with bad luck and injuries every year. Arizona and Colorado are unpredictable. My team is SD, but I won't lie they are atrocious at hitting this year.

Giants need a few good bats, maybe its time to clean the infield up and get rid of Vizquiel.....i know gold glover and everything, but giants need some power to contend. The infield is very weak, while the outfield with rowand and lewis are promising. Power it up, I'd like to see the NL west back into some better competitiveness rather than being the laughing stock they are right now.

  3. They basically have no position players in their farm system other than Posey and Villalona who are not very close to being ready. Posey hasn't even signed. They have a lot of pitching for the future, 3 of them doing well right now in Cain, Lincecum and Sanchez. The team is frankly too old though. The only two players they have on offense that aren't old or horrible are Lewis and Rowand. Castillo is ok, I guess but can't play defense. The rest of the team is old, overpaid and/or replacement level, however.

To answer your question, they may become the Pirates.

  4. Realistically, I think they can compete next year, and should be ready for postseason by 2010, but the rest of the division may be stronger by then as well. The Dodgers, D-Backs and Rockies are also stacked with prospects.

  5. I would say 3 or 4 years

  6. well, their fans think they are a contender every single year

but realistically, i dont see them contending anytime before zitos contract is up. so quite a few years
