  1. Stem cells are already medically available and have been for years.  How long have bone marrow transplants been done?  Like 50 years or more.  Do you know that the correct term for a bone marrow transplant is a stem cell transplant because by definition the marrow is stem cells?

The transplant can be done using either marrow, peripheral blood stem cells or cord blood.  It is used to treat leukemias, lymphomas, myleomas, several non cancerous blood diseases.  It is in trials to treat most autoimmune diseases, is being used in conjunction with other organ transplants to give patients a chance to come off the anti rejection meds, and is the possible cure to aids.

http://www.marrow.org is the National Marrow Donors Program for the US which can tell you about the transplant and sources of stem cells used.  I realize you said no links, but its an official link, not a blog or something.

Stem cells have been medically available for a while now.  There are other things they are being used for currently, but this is what I am most educated about as I had this stem cell transplant last year here in the US paid for by medicaid and medicare using cord blood to treat my leukemia.

  2. any time now , a breakthrough is expected soon ,

  3. That'll be a while.

First, the whole ethics point has to be satisfied; at present, stem cells are taken from umbilical cords and aborted embryos.

Second, the safety has to be assured. Imagine getting stem cells from a source that was diseased.

Third, the intentions for use have to be clear. If they are used for helping people, no problem. If they are used for selfish deeds, or under such circumstances, it could turn out very problematic to justify them.
