I want to know how many years to become an ER doctor. I really don't know what I can specialize in, assuming that the only doctor show I watch is House, and, unfortunatly, That doesn't Help. So if you can please Tell me as much things I can specialize in, and how many years. PLEASE TELL ME THE NAMES. BEST ANSWER FOR THE MOST INFORMATIVE!!! Thanks.

  2. After high school you go to college. That typically takes four years. Then you go to medical school for four years. Then you do post-grad, which entails one year of internship (first year after you graduate from medical school) and then about three more of residency (but this can vary a bit). You're a doctor after you graduate from med school but you aren't done until you complete your residency and an optional fellowship in a special field of particular interest to you (like endocrinology, to name just one). Then you have to maintain CME (continuing medical education) credits every 5 years. Though those can be somewhat fun because they are often held in vacation spots like Puerto Rico, Florida, Ireland, etc.

    So to summarize:

4 years of college (5 is not uncommon)

    4 years of medical school

1 year of internship (also called PGY 1)

3 years of residency (PGY 2... etc)

~2 years of an optional fellowship

Total: 12-14 years after you graduate from high school.

  3. avg..9 yrs

  4. 12 years but it all depends on what kind of doctor you want to be i do know if you want to be a brain surgeon it is 14 years

  5. i love the show house, and srry, but that show is very unaccurate, but to become a dr. it takes 8 years, (pre-med and med school), but i dont know how long it takes to become an er doctor, im pretty sure its 8, but you also have do residency in a hospital, i dont know if thats included in the 8 years but you have to do it, i think?

  6. Well, if you count residency it is 11-12 years after high school on average. Your four year bachelors (I did mine in 3.5 years, some take 5 or more, so that varies), four years of med school, and then a 3-4 year residency.

Specialies are numerous. The main ones are surgery, internal med, pediatrics, and family practice.

The first three all subspecialize as well.

Surgery has specialites in several organ systems, neurosugery, orthopedics, colorectal, cardiothoracic, vascular, OB/Gyn, opthalmology, and urology.

Internal med and pediatrics both subdivide by system as well, neurology, cardiology, GI, endocrinology, nephrology, pulmonology, etc. there are many more, but those are the main ones.
