  1. It is *recommended* that you take four years.  But I would say it's not essential.  It may depend on your major, but you should be fine with three or even two depending (maybe even none, but that might be a stretch) on your circumstances.  They review applications on a case-by-case basis, so it's not like you would be automatically disqualified if you don't take a certain number of years of foreign language.

    I took three years of Spanish (technically two but I was advanced a year, if that makes a difference) and got into the school of engineering just fine.  I'm sure it's similar for most Arts and Sciences majors as well.
