I am a high school senior who is determined to pursue a career in the medical field. However, I am still unsure as to what specialty I would like to work in. I would appreciate any information about how many years of schooling after high school I would need to become a pharmacist and a doctor.

  1. Doctors need at least 8 to 16 years before they can practice. You need 4 years of undergraduate school, 3-4 years of graduate school (aka medical school), 3-7 years for internship. And that is saying that you pass the MCATs in a year. If you are having difficulty in the MCATs, it will take longer.

  2. Eight, you need a Ph.D.

  3. I had once thought about becoming a pharmacist, I worked as a technician for four years. Basically you have to get your Bachelor's degree in Pre-Pharmacy, then make sure you have all the prerequisites to get into pharmacy school, many of the prerequisites are things like statistics, organic chemistry part 1 and 2, anatomy and some other classes. Then you have to get into pharmacy school, you have to take and pass the pcat to get in. After you get into pharmacy school it's three more years of school and one year of rotations(kind of like internships at various different places, ranging from retail grocery stores to hospitals). At the end of your rotations you are finished with school. Then you must take the state pharmacy exam to practice in whichever state you live in to get a license. So, you're talking about at least 7 to 8 years total of school and everything to be finished to become a pharmacist. They do make very good money after finishing school, it just takes a lot time, money, intelligence and dedication. I knew I could do it if I wanted too, but I chose another career path that makes me happier. Good luck!
