  1. depends on what you want to fly. Usually 4-6 years if you get a degree in aviation from a college. You get the hours with it to become a commercial pilot. For a recreation flying prob 3-4 months depending on your willingness to get the hours in

  2. You can do it in about five years. Depending on your ambitions. Are you trying to fly private planes or become a pilot for a commercial airline? First of all you gotta get some kind of experience and there are courses that you can take. Some are offerered online where you can eventually go to their location and fly their aircraft. This will earn you a few flight credits but not alot. This basically serves as a test for you to decide if you really want to become a pilot and to give you the pilot experience but not much else. If you really want to do it, you will be required to pay for the fuel for the aircraft that you train on and that willlll be expensive. Perhaps take out a loan for about 30-50 thousand and that will help you greatly. Also,FYI, if you have any convictons or negative background stuff, forget it.  I've been in aviation for a while and it's not as hard as you'd think to become an airman but your record needs to be clean.. Good luck to you.

  3. --Private pilot, commercial pilot, or airline pilot?

  4. I've seen folks get their pilot's license in 6 weeks... all it takes dedication and money.

Additional - to your Airline Pilot requirement:

Airlines are looking for a commercial pilot, which requires at least 250 hours, and some experience flying commercially.  I knew several folks who built up their time and experience by flying checks at night, or by flying charters for an FBO.

Some of the commuters will take you as a low time pilot, but even they prefer some 'quality experience' like being a Flight Instructor, or a charter or other paid pilot position.

So now I'd say about a minimum of a year or two of dedicated commercial flying should get you an interview with the airlines.
