I'm looking to make my own unity candle but I don't want to do it in our kitchen and it be all of a mess! So, how messy is it? Should I go buy a pot to melt the wax in at the dollar store so I won't ruin our brand new pots?

  1. Making your own candle in your kitchen shouldn't be a problem - I do it regularly. Cover your counters with several layers of newspapers and don't use your regular cookware for wax. The biggest issue is that you'll need a 3"x9" or 4"x12" pillar candle, and the molds for those can cost as much as the completed candle.

Consider buying a plain 3"x9" or 4"x12" pillar candle in the color and scent you prefer, and decorating it yourself. That's the fun part, anyway. Here's some more info. Congratulations and best wishes!

  2. You should definitely use your own pots.

The first time I made a candle, we melted down wax in a pot, took an old square milk carton and some wet sand. we put the sand in the bottom of the carton and formed a shape inside. you could use a form to do this- stick in a glass or a jar with smooth edges. make sure it's smooth inside. Then, pour into the mold once it dries a bit, let it set overnight, then just pop it out. you may have to smooth out the candle a bit.

Also another cool idea that i've tried is buying sheets of beeswax. You cut them into whatever size you want and simply roll them around a wick. It's very relaxing, and you use a blowdryer to soften the wax JUST a bit, then roll it. You can get a variety of colors/scents, and they're absolutely beautiful Plus if you're creative you can mold your own flowers/embelleshments.

    Good luck!

  3. that is a good idea.  You can use wax paper cups or milk cartons for the mold and then just peel off.  You can use crayons for the color.
