  1. Flood usually affect population adversely via the following

    1. loss of arable/farm land

    2. contamination of potable/drinking water

    3. facilitation of the spread of water borne diseases such as cholera and typhoid

    4. loss of life

    5. loss of infrastructure including damage to houses, roadways, bridges etc

Floods can have positive effects. In particular flood plains are common farm areas because of the deposition of silt (and other materials) which commonly improves fertility of the land.

  2. There are immediate and short term effect and there are long term impacts.

Immediately, the people could drown, the family members separate from each other and the rescued ones don't know the fate of others. Shortage of food, water, medicines, clean dry clothes, baby items and so on and so forth. Fertile ground for diseases, sicknesses etc.

Immediate impact will be lack of shelter, moving/settling the survivors to safety/shelter where they can receive basic needs and find the loved ones. Provide support like education so the lives will experience minimum disruption. Clean up the disaster due to the destruction.

In long term, the town needs to be rebuilt. People need to cope with their losses - physical, financial, family members. Some emotional scars need understanding and really long term care.

  3. Some are swept away and drown.  Those who are rescued still lose their homes and their life is completely disrupted.  Also some may survive, but lose their loved ones and pets.  They have to depend on others for water, food, and shelter.  My son and his family had to evacuate for the floods in Kansas City.  They lost their home and most of their possessions.  They were able to go back after the water went down, but it had gone clear over the house, so even the things they had set up high were ruined.  They had to just leave everything behind.  They were among the lucky ones of flood victims.  All 3 of them got out.

  4. I would think it would decrease the population drastically. The survivors would be left with unclean water leading to diseases and illnesses such as Cholera.  These diseases would cause the population to decrease even further. Many people may decide to leave the area as a result...

  5. Floods are devastating natural disasters which can have a terrible effect on the population of a community. Firstly, if the flood is sever enough, people can be swept away or drowned. Secondly, people may decide to move away from this area/community for safety reasons, which would also impact the population.

Finally, illnesses and diseases can be contracted after a flood from the dirty water, or from mosquitooes which breed in wet areas.

  6. Uh... if people drown...?
