  1. It depends entirely on the dealership the salesman is working at.

For example in a  "buy here, pay here" store then the sales person commission is likely based on a % of the down payment.  10-15% of the total down payment is common plus unit bonuses, or other incentives.

Working in the used car department of a new car dealer you will probably make 15%-40% depending upon the store and how it's pay plan is setup.

Here is an example of two stores I've worked at in the past:

    25% on car 1 through 8.

30% retroactive to #1 when you hit 9 cars.

    35% retro at 15

    40% retro at 20

If you made less than $400 in profit on the car, the deal was treated as a "mini" and you made $100.

Another store I worked at focused more heavily on incentives and bonuses.

    25% Commission on Cash Deals

    25% Commission on Financed Deals

20% Commission on Financed Deals if they had Bad Credit

5% of the back-end sales (Warranty, Gap Insurance, etc.)

    ---

They also paid $100 appointment bonuses (make an appointment, write it on the board, if it sells you earn +100 on the deal)   Also included "hattrick" bonuses, sell 3 cars in a day, earn $300 extra.

Plus daily store and week bonuses that would be split amonst sales people if certain number of cars were sold.

The second system works best if the entire sales team is very strong.  If there are any weak links, it's not so good.

The average for a salesman who sells strictly used is probably around $350-400 per unit.  - Selling both new and used will drop that to around $200-250.

  2. its different for every dealership. and it depends on how many cars that salesperson sells. you should be able to ask your hr department or your manager. for example if you hit your goal for the month lets say 10 cars then you can make 10% of the total gross made on each car. but lets just say you hit 8 cars then you can make 7% on the total gross of all the cars you sold....so it just depends ask your manager

  3. I would imagine it depends on the car lot or dealer your working for and how much you can s***w joe blow into paying.

  4. The more YOU s***w your customer, the bigger your cut.

There's no average.  That is why it is SALEmanship.

    Good Luck....

  5. It will vary depending on the deal.

Most places pay between 20% and 30% of the gross profit.  This amount will vary depending on the price of the car and any negotiations.  It also depends on how much the dealer paid for the car vs market value.  I have sold cars for $13k that were owned for $10k, and I have sold cars for $19k that were owned for $19k.

The national average is about $250 per deal.  I know many guys who average 2 or 3 times that amount.
