I drink green tea all day! How much is to much if there even is a thing? I work at a restaurant and we serve a Japanese loose leaf green tea. I brew a big pitcher and sip on it all day and even take it home sometimes, and continue the drinking. Please tell me if there is any harm that could be done by drinking to much tea?

  3. An Overview of Green Tea Overdose

What symptoms can a green tea "overdose" cause? Is it even possible to consume too much green tea? It is likely that the effects of a green tea overdose will vary depending on the source of the green tea (whether it is a beverage or supplement) and the amount consumed. Due to the caffeine content of the tea, consuming too much green tea could potentially cause dangerous symptoms.

Symptoms of a Green Tea Overdose

Green tea contains caffeine. Caffeine is a stimulant, and taking too much can cause problems due to overstimulation. This can lead to green tea overdose symptoms, such as:

    Insomnia

    Muscle twitching

    Difficulty breathing

    Vomiting

    Diarrhea

    Confusion

    Loss of consciousness

    Increased urination

    Fever

    An irregular heart rhythm (arrhythmia)

    Rapid heart rate (tachycardia)

    Hallucinations

    Dizziness

    Seizures

    Loss of life.

Treatment for a Green Tea Overdose

It is not known how to best treat a green tea overdose. Therefore, treatment (if necessary) will involve supportive care, which consists of treating the symptoms that occur as a result of the overdose. For instance, if an overdose caused an irregular heart rhythm, then supportive treatment would include medications to help return the heart to its normal rhythm.

It is important that you seek medical attention immediately if you believe that you may have overdosed on green tea.

  4. Green tea is good for you and drinking a few servings a day is great. But it still has caffeine in it so we must be careful about that. Green tea has 30 mg of caffeine per serving, 8 ounces. The maximum safe level of caffeine we can consume in a day is 300mg. So 10 cups would the the most we can have in a day.

Keep in mind too that caffeine also dehydrates us. So we need to make sure to drink as much water as green tea if you drink more than just a couple of cups a day. Despite the fact that caffeine is a stimulant if we don't offset the caffeine with water it will dehydrate us and actually make us tired.

Also caffeine can make it hard to sleep. It is never recommended to have caffeine within 4 hours of going to sleep.

Caffeine also depletes our bodies of calcium and B vitamins. so if you drink more than a couple of glasses then you need to make sure you are getting extra calcium and B vitamins too.

Too much caffeine can cause dehydration, headaches, sleeping problems, musle aches, mental focus problems, kidney problems, heart problems, skin problems, and other organ problems. You can also get addicted to it if you use too much on a regular basis.

Don't get me wrong caffeine is a fine stimulant when used in moderation. Just like anything else too much is no good.

  5. Actually, green tea has a number of health benefits (preventing cancer, battling diabetes, fighting cholesterol, boosting the immune system...) and it is recommended to drink 4-5 cups each day to reap the full benefits.  According to researchers, it's safe to drink up 10 cups of green tea a day.

In *extreme* amounts, the high amounts of polyphenols can cause liver or kidney damage--green tea *supplements* can have dangerously high levels.  This article has a good overview (also read the study it links to):

So you know, green tea does NOT have more caffeine than coffee.  The average cup of coffee can have anywhere from 80-175 mg of caffeine, depending on the method of preparation.  By comparison, the average cup of green tea has about 25-30mg of caffeine.

However, some people *are* very sensitive to caffeine; if you do find yourself feeling jittery or having heart palpitations, try cutting back on the tea.  Also, tea is a diuretic, which increases urination.  I'd say that, aside from frequent bathroom breaks, you should be fine.

(Incidentally, green tea is best brewed at 180 degrees F, which is just under a boil.  If you brew your tea at too high a temperature, you lose a lot of the health benefits.  It also tastes better at a lower temp.)

  6. green tea is very healthy, filled with antioxidents!  You might pee allot though :)
