I just paid off my car loans that I was paying $450 per month for (yes ridiculous), now I want to save the exact amount in pretax dollars, my tax is about 30 %, how much should I have taken out ?

Thanks, wasn't the brightest at math

  1. What does tax have to do with it?  Your car payments were not pretax.

If you used to pay $450 a month in car payment, then you should take the same $450 and save it each month.

If you want to put money into a 401(k) which is pretax, and want to see your check reduced by exactly $450 a month, there are lots of variables involved.  Just do about $500 and you should see your take home reduced by about $450.

  2. $450/0.7 = $642.86
