While it would be nice to know some of the info before hand, you will not need to have ANY basic knowledge before attending tech school for HVAC. I am in the same squadron as HVAC (CES, REDHORSE). And I can guarantee you, they will teach you all the math and everything you will need to know to succeed in the job and your career.
