As of July 17, 2008, the United States National debt stood at $9.518 Trillion dollars.

The United States budget office prefers to separate that huge $9.518 Trillion dollars into 2 components - Debt held by the public, and intragovernmental holdings.  This trick is good enough to fool CNN into reporting debt and deficit numbers much lower then they actually are.  Read the following short article for a more detailed explanation:
