I am building a new Intel-based computer. It will be using an Asus P5E LGA 775 X38 Motherboard.

Motherboard Website:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131219

The Motherboard's RAM standard is up to 8GB of DDR2 1200.

In the past, I have heard that 32 bit operating systems and processors cant use RAM sticks larger than 1GB. Is this still true? In my new computer, I plan on using Windows Vista Ultimate 32 bit. My processor is an Intel Quad Core Q6600.

So my question is if I can use 8GB of RAM with a 32-bit Operating System, or am I limited to 4GB? Thanks for anyone who contributes.

  1. 32 bit supports up to 4GB ( XP = 3GB max I think)

64 Bit supports up to 128GB

  2. 32 Bit O/S can ONLY use about 3.5GB ram and no more

64 Bit O/S can use 8GB ram and more

  3. 32Bit is limited to 4GB but sometimes the OS only detects 3GB. With 64Bit you can go over 8GB even 32GB.

  4. 32bit Windows can only address 3.5GB of RAM even though 32bit computers can, theoretically, address 4GB.
